Why per-AP cost doesn't drop with scale
Structured cabling gets cheaper per drop as a project gets bigger, because mobilization and pathway setup costs are fixed and get shared across more drops. WiFi access points don't work that way. Each AP is its own independent unit needing its own cable drop, its own PoE port, and its own placement and configuration, no matter how many other APs are in the same project. A 75-AP deployment doesn't get meaningfully cheaper per AP than a 5-AP deployment; the per-AP range ($1,500-$4,000 at small scale vs. $1,665-$3,870 at large scale) stays close across every size tier above.
What drives the per-AP number
- Full-service vs. budget tier. The $650-$1,400 budget band and $1,400-$3,500 full-service band reflect different scopes, not just different vendors. Full-service includes a proper site survey and controller licensing; budget tier often skips one or both.
- Cabling requirement. Each AP typically needs its own Cat6 or Cat6A drop back to a switch. If the space already has cabling in the right locations, cost drops; if new drops are needed for every AP, that's most of the per-AP price.
