Per-AP vs. whole-home package: same job, two ways to price it

These aren't two different products. They're the same mesh WiFi job priced two different ways. The per-AP figure ($265-$644) is useful for sizing a larger or unusually-shaped home that needs more than 2-3 nodes. The whole-home package figure ($300-$600) is a faster estimate for the common case: a standard 2-3 node mesh kit covering a typical single-family home. A 3-node install priced per-AP ($795-$1,932) runs noticeably higher than the package estimate ($300-$600). The gap reflects the package figure being a blended hardware-plus-basic-setup number from a different source methodology, not the same scope priced inconsistently. Treat the per-AP figure as the more conservative, fuller-service estimate.

What drives the mesh WiFi number

  • Home size and node count. The core driver. A typical home covers well with 2-3 nodes; larger or multi-story homes, or homes with dense wall construction, need more nodes to eliminate dead zones.
  • Wall material and construction. Mesh WiFi does penetrate walls, but not equally. Drywall interior walls barely slow a signal down; brick, concrete, or metal-lath plaster walls (common in older homes) attenuate it significantly and may require an extra node to compensate.
  • Hardware tier. Mesh hardware alone runs $150-$350 per node. Consumer-tier kits (Eero, Google Nest WiFi Pro class) sit at the lower-to-middle end of that band; more advanced tri-band or WiFi 6E/7 hardware costs more per node.
  • Wired vs. wireless backhaul. Mesh nodes connected to each other over the home's existing Ethernet wiring (wired backhaul) perform better and are more reliable than nodes relying on wireless mesh backhaul, but wired backhaul requires the home to already have (or add) Ethernet drops between node locations.
